Blockade, traffic jam in Shahbagh demanding implementation of ‘July Charter’

They started the sit-in program from 10:30 am today, Thursday, under the banner of the July martyrs’ families and the July fighters (injured). This has caused traffic jams at Shahbagh intersection and all the roads around it. Abu Hasan, who participated in the blockade, told Prothom Alo that their program will continue until the July Charter is announced.

At that time, they kept chanting slogans like ‘Julai evasion, no way, no way’ and ‘Julai certificate must be given, must be given, must be given’. The demands of the blockaders include recognition of the July martyrs and July fighters, lifelong respect for the families of the martyrs and the injured, full assurance of treatment, education and welfare, taking responsibility for the families of the martyrs and the injured, making the state bear all the treatment, rehabilitation, employment and welfare expenses of the injured, ensuring a lifetime honorable allowance for the injured and martyrs’ families, establishing a special legal protection and support center for the families of the martyrs and the injured, conducting trials according to international standards against those responsible for the repression of the martyrs and the injured, and forming an independent truth and justice commission. Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Khalid Mansur said that as a result of the blockade, traffic has stopped at Shahbagh intersection and the roads around it. Traffic jams have been created there.

The National Consensus Commission wants to finalize the July Charter by completing the second phase of discussions today. However, the commission’s discussions with political parties to build consensus are not yet complete.
