Bangladesh spared from major uncertainty with Trump’s decision on tariffs
Khalilur Rahman told Prothom Alo from Washington DC in response to the US imposing a 20 percent tariff on goods imported from Bangladesh, reducing it by 15 percent after the third round of talks. The Bangladesh delegation was led by Trade Advisor Sheikh Bashiruddin in the talks with the US in Washington DC. National Security Advisor Khalilur Rahman was also in the team. The new tariff rate was announced by an executive order of US President Trump on Thursday local time. The US administration had last informed Bangladesh of the 35 percent countervailing duty in a letter. Accordingly, the tariff was reduced by 15 percent and the new rate was announced.
Khalilur Rahman told Prothom Alo, “The Trump administration’s decision to reduce the tariffs imposed on Bangladesh before the August 1 deadline has saved us from a major uncertainty. We were able to finalize the complex tariff negotiations within that deadline. Otherwise, we would not have received this decision; and we would have had to bear the burden of the 35 percent tariff imposed last April.” Khalilur Rahman further said, “President Trump has imposed a 20 percent tariff on Bangladesh, which is equal to or slightly higher than our main competitor countries; and 5 percent less than India. Therefore, our export products will remain competitive in the American market. This is a very relief for the ready-made garment industry and millions of people dependent on it.”
