Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis wants elections through partial PR system: Mamunul Haque

The current electoral system does not reflect the true opinion of the majority, said Amir of Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis Maulana Mamunul Haque. He said, “We want a partial PR system (proportional representation system). The current system does not reflect the true opinion of the majority. Therefore, it is necessary to introduce a partial PR system in the lower house and a full PR system in the upper house for fair and inclusive representative elections.” Maulana Mamunul Haque said this at a press briefing organized at the Institution of Diploma Engineers auditorium in Kakrail, the capital, on Sunday morning. He said, “Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis is one of those who have suffered the most oppression and torture in the country’s political arena for 15 years.

Almost all of our central leaders were imprisoned for a long time. The head of the fascist regime, Sheikh Hasina, directly targeted our organization and leadership. Calling for the unbreakable anti-fascist unity, the leader of the Khilafat said, “The historical unity built on the streets cannot be destroyed. The current trend of political coordination, where no one is overthrowing or suppressing anyone, should be maintained. If someone goes back to the tradition of the Awami League and engages in politics of suppression and overthrow, then the Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis will call for national unity and play an active role.”

Regarding the elections, Mamunul Haque said, “The Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis will take electoral steps by prioritizing the interests of Islam and the country. If necessary, it will elect all 300 seats under the rickshaw symbol. Again, it is ready to take steps if the interests of Islam and the country are better protected through a larger alliance or electoral agreement.”

The Amir of the Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis said, “Our demand to the current interim government is that the issues that are still unresolved in the electoral structure must be clarified before the nation quickly.” Although there is consensus on the bicameral structure of the parliament, a decision is still needed on how the upper and lower houses will be formed.’

Present at the briefing were Maulana Akram Ali, member of the Guardian Council of Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis, Senior Nayeb Amir Maulana Yusuf Ashraf, Maulana Ali Usman, Maulana Mohiuddin Rabbani, Maulana Shahinur Pasha Chowdhury, Joint Secretary General Maulana Ataullah Amin, Mufti Sharafat Hossain, Maulana Tofazzal Hossain Miyazi, Maulana Sharif Saidur Rahman, among others.
