Bangladesh wins two bronze medals at International AI Olympiad in China
Bangladesh has won two bronze medals in the second edition of the International Olympiad on Artificial Intelligence (IOAI). 86 teams from 73 countries participated in this Olympiad held in Beijing, China.

This year’s Olympiad began on August 2. Then, a two-day competition phase was held on August 5 and 6. The results were announced in the final phase today, Friday.
Md. Riasat Islam, a 10th grade student of Rajuk Uttara Model College, and Arefin Anwar, a 12th grade student of St. Joseph Higher Secondary School, won bronze medals for the Bangladesh team. Misbah Uddin, a 12th grade student of Notre Dame College, received the ‘Honorable Mention’. Another member of the four-member team is Abrar Shahid, a class 12 student of Notre Dame College. Professor BM Mainul Hossain, the team leader of the Bangladesh team from Beijing and director of the Institute of Information Technology, Dhaka University, said, “There is no comparison to the joy of being able to honor your country on the world stage. Bangladesh is now known and respected by everyone in the Olympiad world. He said, “Our youngest member did the best in this year’s Olympiad. This shows that our students have already become interested in artificial intelligence.”
Riyasat Islam, the youngest member of the Bangladesh team, said, “I am very happy to participate in the IOAI for the first time and get a bronze medal. Representing my country was a meaningful experience for me. The questions this time were not easy, but because of our efforts, we were able to solve them.” Another member Arefin Anwar said, “First of all, it feels good to get a medal. This year, IOAI was different – both the organization and the competition.’
ABM Shawkat Ali, Vice Chancellor of Bangladesh University of Business Technology, said, ‘At a time when the entire world is moving towards AI, today’s news is very promising and heartening for us. Bangladesh University of Business Technology is very proud and honored to be part of this glorious journey.’
Rezaul Hasan, CEO of Rev Chat, one of the sponsors of Bangladesh AI Olympiad, congratulated the contestants, their mentors and everyone involved in Bangladesh AI Olympiad and said, ‘This success of our teenagers has inspired everyone.’ M. Manzoor Mahmud, President of Datasoft Systems, said that this award will inspire the technology-loving youth of Bangladesh. He said, it will further increase the interest of the youth in cutting-edge technologies like AI.
The team’s mentor and coach, Mohammad Azam Khan, Assistant Professor of the Department of Software Engineering at Daffodil International University, said, “Our students have proven that the youth of Bangladesh can compete on an equal footing in the fight for technology and innovation on the global stage.”
The national phase of the ‘Bangladesh Artificial Intelligence Olympiad’ was successfully held at Bangladesh University of Business and Technology (BUBT) on May 17 this year. A total of 171 students competed in the machine learning contest and 235 in the quiz contest at the national level through two stages of selection. The national team was selected through a two-day training workshop at the Institute of Information Technology, University of Dhaka.
The Bangladesh Open Source Network is the organizer of this Olympiad in the country. The 2025 edition is sponsored by BUBT, the country’s leading technology institutions – Rev Chat, Brain Station 23, Intelligent Machines and Creative IT Institute. In addition, the popular teen magazine ‘Kishore Alo’ and the science monthly magazine ‘Bijanchinta’ were partners in the event.
