ASI suspended for beating up ‘July fighter’ in Sylhet
An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of the police has been accused of beating a registered ‘July fighter’ in Sylhet. Islam Uddin, who was injured in the beating, is undergoing treatment at the Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital. The incident took place in the Lamabazar area of Sylhet city early on Saturday.

Accused ASI Jasim Uddin was working at the Lamabazar police outpost in Sylhet. He has been temporarily suspended after the incident. In addition, an investigation committee has been formed with an additional deputy police commissioner in the incident. Fakhrul Hasan, joint member secretary of the Sylhet Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, said that Islam Uddin used to drive a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw. After being injured in the movement in July, he can no longer drive an auto-rickshaw. He runs a small tea shop to support his family. On Saturday, when Islam Uddin opened his shop after Fajr prayers as usual, ASI Jasim Uddin went there and asked why he opened his shop so early. At one point, he beat him up. At that time, when he was forced to take him to the police van, Islam Uddin introduced himself as a ‘July fighter’.
Fakhrul Hasan said, ‘ASI Jasim Islam Uddin tried to take him to the car by insulting him, saying, “You killed the police, you burned the outposts” during the movement, punching and slapping him. At one stage, he left Islam Uddin on the road.’
In this regard, Sylhet Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) Mohammad Saiful Islam said that Sylhet Metropolitan Police Commissioner Rezaul Karim immediately withdrew ASI Jasim Uddin after receiving the complaint and later ordered his temporary suspension. An investigation committee has been formed with an additional deputy commissioner in this incident. Action will be taken as per the recommendations of the investigation committee’s report. The Sylhet District Committee of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement has strongly condemned the incident. In addition, NCP central member Nurul Huda (Juneed) strongly condemned the incident and called for an investigation into the matter.
Meanwhile, Sylhet Metropolitan BNP Acting President Rezaul Hasan Kayes Lodi went to see Islam Uddin, who is undergoing treatment at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, on Saturday afternoon.
