Anti-discrimination student movement calls for ’71 not to be pitted against ’24
In a press release sent to the media on Tuesday, the organization strongly protested and condemned such attempts.
The Anti-Discrimination Student Movement said, ’71 and ’24 are never contradictory to each other; rather, the acquisition of territory in 1947, independence in 1971, and liberation from fascism through the student-public uprising in 2024—these three chapters are part of the same continuous liberation struggle. The organization said, ‘The grave of fascism created as a result of the Mujibist constitution has been written in the uprising of 2024. Therefore, ’71 and ’24—both are part of our pride. The anti-discrimination student movement respectfully acknowledges and respects each of these struggles equally.
The anti-discrimination student movement believes that the attempt to bring ’71 and ’24 face to face is actually an attempt to bring back the ‘binary of Shapla and Shahbagh’, which creates an opportunity to make the Awami League relevant in politics again. However, the student uprising of 2024 was a mass protest against the weak state structure formed on the basis of the Mujib regime and the flawed constitution of 1972. The organization warned, ‘Students and the public will never accept such apolitical politics. We are calling for politics in the national interest and public welfare. Otherwise, if someone makes such an attempt to make the Awami League relevant, the anti-discrimination student movement will lead the movement against him along with the students and the public.’
