Accused arrested from Dhaka after two years for stealing money by scattering dirt in Mymensingh
The arrested Md. Hannan (62) is the son of the deceased Ali Mia of the Chawkbazar area of Dhaka. He gave a statement in the Mymensingh court on Wednesday evening, admitting responsibility for the theft. Earlier, he was arrested from the Chawkbazar area of Dhaka on Tuesday night. This information was given in a press release sent by the PBI’s Mymensingh office last night.
PBI sources said that on November 9, 2022, businessman Shamsul Alam came in front of Lima Printing Press after withdrawing money from Pubali Bank in the Choto Bazar area of Mymensingh Nagar after making a transaction at Janata Bank. There, some unidentified persons sprinkled dirt on his clothes and confused him by asking, ‘Where did the dirt come from?’ The gang members fled with the bag of money kept nearby while cleaning the clothes. A case was registered at the Kotwali police station in this incident. After the police investigation, they submitted a ‘final report’ to the court. Later, on the court’s orders, the PBI took over the investigation of the incident. The accused was identified and arrested after analyzing the CCTV footage with the help of information technology and artificial intelligence (AI).
In this regard, PBI Superintendent of Police Rakibul Akhter said, ‘As the incident took place in a crowded area, it was difficult to identify the real thief in the CCTV footage. After analyzing the footage and technical assistance for almost two years, we identified and arrested Hannan. Hannan is an active member of an inter-district thief gang. He is accused of using the same technique in different districts to rob people by sprinkling dirt on their bodies. There are multiple cases against him.’
