Desk Report:
Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus has spoken about the issue of participation of Awami League in the upcoming national elections. In an interview with the British media outlet BBC, he said that Awami League will decide whether they will participate in the elections or not. In addition, the Election Commission will also decide who or who will participate in the elections.
A. League will decide whether
Ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina left for India after being ousted. It is still uncertain whether her party Awami League will participate in the upcoming elections or not. A Bangladeshi court has charged her with crimes against humanity. In this regard, Dr. Yunus said, “They (Awami League) will decide whether they will participate in the elections or not. I cannot take this decision for them. The Election Commission will decide who will participate in the elections.” Victims of Sheikh Hasina’s harsh rule are still angry. Thousands of protesters have taken to the streets in recent months, demanding that she be brought to justice for the repression of student protesters during her rule. A Bangladeshi court has issued an arrest warrant against her. However, India has not yet made a decision on this issue. Meanwhile, questions are also being raised about the safety of Awami League leaders and activists under the leadership of Dr. Yunus. In February, after Sheikh Hasina announced a YouTube speech, the houses of several Awami League leaders were attacked. Even the house of Sheikh Hasina’s father, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was vandalized and set on fire.
A. League will decide whether
In a post shared on social media, the Awami League alleged that the interim government was presenting this violence as justified. When the BBC asked Dr. Yunus about this, he supported his government’s position. Dr. Muhammad Yunus said, “There are courts, there are laws, you can file a complaint at the police station. Don’t just sit there complaining to a BBC reporter, go to the police station and complain and see how the law works.”
