BNP leaders held a ‘unity rally’ in Kaliakoir, Gazipur on Sunday afternoon. Although a large number of leaders and activists from the district and upazila levels, including the three central leaders, were present, District BNP Member Secretary Chowdhury Ishraq Ahmed Siddiqui was not seen. Even his followers and most of the leaders of the two newly announced convening committees did not attend.
This unity rally was organized in the Kaliakair Bazar area of the upazila on Sunday afternoon to renew members and recruit new members. BNP Central Organizing Secretary (Dhaka Division) Kazi Sayedul Alam was the chief guest. In the speeches given by the leaders and activists at the rally, anger was expressed by alleging bias towards the new committee.
Party leaders and activists said that eight committees under the district BNP were declared dissolved on May 20. After that, separate meetings were organized with the district and central leaders and grassroots leaders and activists of Sadar, Sreepur, Kaliakair, Kapasia and Kaliganj upazilas and municipal BNP. After that meeting, eight 41-member convening committees were announced on June 14. Although all the committees were accepted by local leaders and activists, criticism arose about the Kaliakair Upazila and Municipal BNP committees. Followers of District BNP Member Secretary Chowdhury Ishraq Ahmed Siddique were made the conveners and member secretaries of the two committees. The new committee held a joyous procession on June 16, but on the same day, a large number of leaders and activists led by former Upazila BNP General Secretary Parvez Ahmed protested demanding the cancellation of the committee. At one stage, there were incidents of chases and clashes. After filing a case in this incident, the police arrested Parvez Ahmed and he was expelled from BNP on the same day. After that, there was a dilemma and division in the Upazila BNP.
was organized. The rally was presided over by BNP Central Committee Co-Labor Secretary Humayun Kabir Khan. Among others, BNP executive committee member and former mayor Mujibur Rahman, former Kaliakair Upazila BNP president Muhammad Helal Uddin, municipal BNP convening committee member Md. Saizuddin Ahmed and others spoke.
Kaliakair Upazila BNP convener Nurul Islam Sikder said, “Today is not our rally. They are rallying against us. They do not accept the committee. That is why they held the rally excluding us. They called it a unity rally. But we are outside of unity. No one from our convening committee went there.”
