What game did Trump play by getting involved in a war that his predecessors avoided?
The United States has used a variety of tactics over the past two decades to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, including tough sanctions, sabotage, cyberattacks and diplomatic negotiations. But it has never directly engaged in a show of military force.
At least four US presidents have consciously kept the United States from getting involved in a war in the Middle East, and Trump has entered the war with a show of military force after midnight on Saturday (approximately 2:30 am local time).
Israel attacked Iran on June 13, killing several of the country’s top military commanders and nuclear scientists. Since then, the two countries have been engaged in air strikes and counterattacks. The leaders and generals in Tehran who survived the Israeli attack could take the final step towards the country’s acquisition of nuclear weapons – a risk that Trump has been saying for several days, expressing his fear that he cannot take.
Amidst all this talk, Trump suddenly sent a B-2 bomber from the other side of the world and launched the most powerful bomb attack on the most important target in Iran’s nuclear facilities.
