As the head of the non-partisan interim government, Professor Muhammad Yunus’s responsibility is to ensure equal treatment of all political parties. Publishing a joint statement with the leader of any political party questions his impartiality and acceptability and sends a message of state discrimination to other political parties. The Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis made this response in a statement sent to the media on Saturday regarding the meeting between Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus and BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman in London.
However, the Khilafat Majlis has identified the issue of keeping the possibility of national elections open in February with conditions as a positive development. The party’s Ameer Maulana Muhammad Mamunul Haque, Senior Nayeb Ameer Maulana Yusuf Ashraf and Secretary General Maulana Jalaluddin Ahmed issued this joint statement. In the statement, they said that they welcome any constructive dialogue and discussion to resolve the ongoing political unrest in the country and pave the way for an acceptable, peaceful and fair election. In this context, the discussion on the election process, judicial progress and desired reforms in the meeting held between Tarique Rahman and Muhammad Yunus on Friday is timely and important in principle. The statement said that earlier, when the chief advisor announced the possible schedule of the elections in the first week of April, the Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis welcomed it. However, the party’s initial position was that if the necessary reforms and visible progress in the judicial process can be ensured, then holding elections in February would be more realistic and acceptable. The party’s leaders hope that the leadership of the interim government will play a more cautious and balanced role in the coming days, so that national unity is established and an acceptable electoral environment is ensured.
