A ‘Gano Minar’ will be built in the capital with the initiative of citizens from all walks of life to commemorate the mass resistance and sacrifices made during the July Uprising. To implement this initiative, the ‘Gano Minar Implementation Committee’ has been formed comprising of university teachers, media workers, cultural figures and prominent citizens of various levels.

The committee gave this information at a press conference at the Madhur Canteen of Dhaka University on Thursday afternoon.

The press conference was attended by Bangla Academy Director General Mohammad Azam, Dhaka University Mass Communication and Journalism Department Associate Professor Khorshed Alam, Sociology Department Associate Professor Samina Lutfa, filmmaker and architect Qamar Ahmad Saimon, and prominent citizens.

At the press conference, they said that the green square between Bir Uttam Major General Azizur Rahman Road and Bijoy Sarani has been selected as the site for the Gano Minar. Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has already agreed to allocate land, provide financial and engineering support for the construction of the Gano Minar. The names and identities of 1,400 martyrs recognized by the United Nations in the July Uprising (in the UN fact-finding report last February) will be engraved and preserved on the Gano Minar.

The Gano Minar Implementation Committee also informed the press conference that people from different classes and professions are spontaneously joining the committee. The goal of this inclusive civic initiative is to preserve the memory of the 2024 mass uprising and martyrs as a memorial; so that the spirit of human sacrifice and resistance is transmitted from generation to generation.
