The number of Bangladeshi citizens becoming refugees in various countries of the world is increasing. In the last five years, i.e. from 2020 to 2024, the rate of increase in the number of Bangladeshis becoming refugees in various parts of the world has been increasing every year. In 2024, 28,473 Bangladeshis were registered as refugees with the United Nations. In the same year, 1 lakh 8 thousand 131 Bangladeshis sought political asylum in various countries. The vast majority of Bangladeshis have registered themselves as refugees and political asylum seekers in countries of Europe and the Americas.

And in the countries of the North American continent, in addition to the United States and Canada, they have registered as refugees and political asylum seekers in countries like Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Papua New Guinea in the South American continent. In Asia, Bangladeshis have also registered in Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Hong Kong, as well as Australia and New Zealand. Even in 2024, 6 Bangladeshis registered themselves as refugees in the East African country of Somalia.
