ACC to investigate Tk 8,000 crore transactions of Chittagong businessman Shawkat Ali Chowdhury’s family
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) will investigate the allegations of embezzlement of Tk 8,000 crore against the family of Chattogram shipbreaking businessman Shawkat Ali Chowdhury. ACC Director General Akhter Hossain gave this information in response to a journalist’s question at a press conference at the ACC head office in Segunbagicha in the capital on Sunday.

The ACC Director General told the journalist, “The complaint you have presented has just been sent to the scrutiny committee. They will review the matter and present it to the ACC Commission with their evaluation. A decision will be taken on the matter later.” In addition, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, son of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was ousted in the student-public uprising, has been accused of embezzling Tk 5.13 billion by not completing a project of the ICT Ministry. Former State Minister for Information and Communication Technology Junaid Ahmed Palak is alleged to have assisted him in this matter. In response to a question at the press conference, the ACC Director General said that records are being collected and questioned in this regard.
Meanwhile, dismissed National Board of Revenue (NBR) official Matiur Rahman, who was involved in the goat scandal, and his wife Laila Kaniz, former chairman of Raipura Upazila Parishad in Narsingdi, have been sent on a one-day remand in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on charges of concealing information and acquiring illegal wealth. Magistrate Monirul Islam of Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court issued the order after the remand hearing on Sunday.
