Chhatra Dal leader Hamim expresses regret to teacher Monami

Tanvir Bari Hamim was the GS candidate of the Chhatra Dal-backed panel during the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) elections. He came in second place with 5,283 votes.

Even after the election results were announced, Hamim remained in the news for an incident that day (September 9). He got into an argument with Shehreen Amin Monami, a teacher and assistant proctor of the university’s public administration department who was in charge of security that day.

When Monami threatened to resign at that time, Hamim retorted, “What will happen to me if you resign?”

Since this incident, the issue has been discussed and criticized on social media. Last (Thursday) night, Tanvir Bari Hamim and teacher Shehreen Amin Monami spoke on a YouTube channel about the situation at the time of the incident.

The Chhatra Dal leader expressed regret for such behavior with the teacher. He said, “Ma’am was in charge as an administrator at that time. I spoke to her as an administrator, not as a teacher. Yet she is my teacher. I shouldn’t have spoken like this while getting excited as a student. That’s why I felt sorry for myself all the time. It wasn’t right for me to speak like this, after all, he is my teacher.’

Hamim also said that the incident was not a reaction to a single issue. According to him, since the morning of the election day, there were multiple allegations of irregularities and violations of the code of conduct. Allegations of bias were being raised in those matters as a whole. No allegations of bias were made against Monami Ma’am individually.

Tanvir Bari Hamim said, ‘I protested then, not as my teacher. I protested as an administrative officer. Because I have a very good relationship and a respectful relationship with Ma’am. But the way I should protest with an administrative officer, the language of my protest was right. But I said there while getting excited, that’s why I myself felt sorry all the time, but in fact it wasn’t right to do it like this. Because before everything, he is my teacher.’

Since this incident, various insults have been made about Teacher Monami on social media. He is being promoted with the tag ‘Shibir’. Regarding this, Hamim said, ‘I want to say in front of everyone, if you have any evidence that any of those who wrote nonsense about you, ma’am, have any organizational affiliation, please give it to me. I will take organizational action against them. If necessary, I will take administrative action.’
