Court issues notice to BCCI after spending Tk 48 lakh on bananas

The court has issued a notice to the country’s cricket governing body BCCI in response to multiple petitions filed in the Uttarakhand High Court. The petitions allege that funds sent by the BCCI to the state cricket body have been misused, of which Rs 35 lakh (over Rs 48 lakh) have been spent on buying bananas for players alone.

The petition was filed by some complainants based on the audit report of the Cricket Association of Uttarakhand (CAU) for the financial year 2024-25. According to the Times of India, the petitioners in the Uttarakhand High Court alleged that out of the Rs 12 crore, Rs 35 lakh was spent on buying bananas for players in the state alone. The hearing is being held on multiple petitions filed by Sanjay Rawat and others before a single bench of Justice Manoj Kumar Tiwari.

The court has sought an explanation from the BCCI on allegations of irregularities in the money paid by the board. He pointed out that a large part of the funds allegedly misused by the CAU came from the BCCI. The court asked the BCCI to respond to the notice by September 12. The next hearing is on Friday. The audit report also showed that Rs 6.4 crore was spent on event management. The expenditure on tournaments and trials was shown to be Rs 26.3 crore – where the expenditure in the previous financial year was Rs 22.3 crore.

The petitioners alleged that the Uttarakhand Cricket Association had actually embezzled crores of rupees in the name of food expenses.
