Reasons for the unexpected victory of Chhatra Shibir
Due to its ‘clean image’, Islami Chhatra Shibir has won an absolute victory in the Dhaka University Hall Student Union and DUCSU elections. Two teachers of Dhaka University and a former GS of DUCSU believe that this incredible victory was achieved because the Chhatra Shibir’s party program and various student-friendly activities were well-organized and conveyed to the general students. According to them, the Nationalist Chhatra Dal and Bangladesh Democratic Students’ Union (Bagchas) were not organized. As a result, they could not convey their work plan properly to the students. Compared to the Shibir candidates, the campaigns of various left organizations including the student union and independent candidates could not attract voters.
Reasons for the unexpected victory of Chhatra Shibir
Farid Uddin Ahmed, a professor of the Department of Political Science at Dhaka University, told Prothom Alo, ‘Apart from some shortcomings, this year’s DUCSU and Hall Student Union elections were fairly acceptable. However, Chhatra Dal, Bagchas, Chhatra Union and independent candidates have rejected the results of the vote. This is the first time in the history of the Hall Student Union and DUCSU elections that Chhatra Shibir has won an absolute victory in most of the seats, including VP, GS, AGS. Chhatra Shibir candidates have not achieved such a feat in the Hall Student Union and DUCSU elections before.
Professor Farid Uddin Ahmed said, “Chhatra Shibir is a religious-based political organization. The boys of this organization do cadre-based student politics, this is their tradition.”
Farid Uddin Ahmed said that since the July Uprising, Chhatra Shibir has been preparing for the DUCSU elections in an organized manner at Dhaka University. The student organization of Jamaat-e-Islami has nominated two front-line leaders of the July Uprising as DUCSU VP and GS candidates. They have conducted public relations in every hall, faculty and dormitories around the campus. Chhatra Shibir’s preparations for this year’s DUCSU elections have been going on for about a year. During this time, they have created a positive image for most students.
