Tarique Rahman must decide to return home, government will provide documents if needed: Foreign Affairs Advisor
Tarique Rahman was arrested during the military-backed caretaker government’s rule after the 11/11 political upheaval of 2007. He was released on bail the next year and went to the UK for medical treatment. Tarique Rahman has been in that country with his family for almost a decade and a half since then. During the Awami League era, he was convicted in the Ekushey August grenade attack and 10 truck weapons cases. All those sentences have already been canceled. He has also been acquitted of other cases. Discussions have been going on about Tarique Rahman’s return to the country since the fall of the Awami League government in a mass uprising last year. Journalists questioned the Foreign Affairs Advisor about this at the Foreign Ministry on Thursday.
All the cases against BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman have been settled. In response to a question from reporters whether there is any initiative or process to bring him back, Touhid Hossain said, “When Tarique Rahman will return is his decision. He is a citizen of this country, he can come anytime. However, if there is any problem with travel documents to come, we will resolve it, but he will have to take the decision.”
When asked whether he has applied for a passport, the foreign affairs advisor said, “I don’t know so far. Even if he has, it has not come to my attention. When he comes, the passport or travel documents will be provided, whatever is needed.”
In response to a question about whether you will take any initiative yourself, Touhid Hossain said, “I don’t think that will be necessary. That means we won’t tell you why you don’t come. When he wants to come, whatever assistance is needed will be provided.”
