8 arrested in Chittagong University clash
Police have arrested eight people in connection with the clash between students and villagers at Chittagong University. They were arrested in a drive at various places in Hathazari on Tuesday night. Hathazari Circle Additional Superintendent of Police Kazi Md. Tarek Aziz confirmed the arrests to Prothom Alo on Wednesday afternoon.

After the university authorities filed a case yesterday in connection with the clash, the police conducted a drive at night and arrested eight accused. They are Md. Imran Hossain (35), Hasan (22), Russell (30), Md. Alamgir (35), Md. Nazrul Islam (30), Md. Zahed (30), Md. Arman (24) and Didarul Alam (46). They are all residents of different wards of Fatehpur Union in Hathazari, Chittagong. Among them, Imran, Hasan and Russell are accused in the case filed in connection with the clash. Hathazari Circle Additional Superintendent of Police Kazi Md. Tarek Aziz told Prothom Alo that the police conducted raids to arrest the accused in various places in Hathazari. The eight arrested are accused in the case filed in connection with the clash.
Earlier, yesterday, the authorities filed a case against 1,095 people in connection with the clash between students and villagers at Chittagong University. The university’s Deputy Registrar (Security) Abdur Rahim filed the case with Hathazari Police Station as the plaintiff. The names of 95 people were mentioned in it and another 1,000 unidentified people were named as accused.
The students complained that the clash was over the incident of a student being beaten by the doorman of a rented house, but it was not mentioned in the case report. When asked about the fact that the beating of the student was not mentioned in the case report, Abdur Rahim, the plaintiff in the case, said that the case was filed as per the decision of the university authorities.
Hathazari Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abu Mahmud Kawsar Hossain confirmed the matter of the case. The accused in the case include Jubo League leaders Md. Hanif, Md. Iqbal, Md. Rezaul, Md. Sarwar, Solaiman, Mohi Uddin, Khorshed, Jisan and Arman, all residents of the local Jobra village.
From 12:15 am on Saturday to noon the next day, several clashes and chases between local residents and students took place in the Gate No. 2 area of the university. The clash started after a complaint was made that a female student of the university was beaten. In the clash, Associate Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Md. Kamal Uddin, Proctor Professor Tanvir Mohammad Haider Arif and at least 200 students were injured. Local residents claim that 10 to 12 local residents were injured in the incident.
