Police have arrested Golam Azam (28), former coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, and his associate Shahadat Hossain (28), in a case of robbery and extortion in Patgram, Lalmonirhat.

They were arrested after local gold trader Shuvo Sharma filed a case against five people at Patgram Police Station on Thursday night. The arrested Golam Azam and Shahadat Hossain live in Kottoli village of Patgram Municipality. The case statement says that a person named Mamun Hossain had made jewelry 20-25 days ago from Yasin Ali, the owner of Isha Jewelers in Madhya Bazar of the upazila. At that time, Mamun owed some money. On the night of August 2, gold trader Yasin Ali and Shuvo Sharma were on their way back from Mamun’s house with the outstanding money when the accused blocked their way. At that time, although Yasin managed to escape, accused Shahadat Hossain and Sagar Hossain beat Shuvo Sharma and snatched his mobile and shop keys at knifepoint. Later, around 2.5 lakh taka was transferred from Shuvo Sharma’s Rupali Bank account to various accounts using e-banking through mobile.

The statement said that after the incident, Shuvo Sharma came to know about the matter when he tried to withdraw money from his bank account. Later, it was learned that the stolen money went to the hands of three accused Zayed Bin Sabit, Matiur Rahman and Golam Azam in different stages.

Patgram Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mizanur Rahman said that the two have been arrested and sent to jail through the court.
