Despite the stoppage of the movement, the NBR’s revenue collection has not picked up speed.

There was a deficit of about 3,000 crore taka in customs and tax collection in July. Even after the movement stopped, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) could not improve revenue collection.

On Wednesday, the NBR released an updated picture of customs and tax collection for July. It was seen that the NBR’s revenue collection target in July was 30,111 crore taka, but it collected 27,247 crore taka. The deficit is 2,864 crore taka. The NBR’s movement in May and June led to a large revenue deficit in the last fiscal year. The desired revenue was not collected in the last two months. Revenue collection was hampered by various programs of the movement. NBR officials and employees protested in those two months demanding rational reforms in the revenue sector, but revenue collection did not pick up speed in July either.

Some NBR officials said that after the movement, there is a fear of dismissal and transfer among NBR officials. There is little attention on revenue collection.

According to the NBR, despite the revenue collection deficit in July last year, more than Tk 4,000 crore has been collected since July of the last fiscal year. Tk 21,916 crore was collected in July 2024. That month, student and public movements were going on. Curfew lasted for a few days.

According to the NBR, the highest revenue was collected from VAT in July this year. Tk 11,352 crore was collected from this sector. In addition, Tk 9,601 crore was collected from the custom sector and Tk 6,294 crore from income tax.
