The nation cannot be modernized without modernizing teachers. One cannot become a teacher by teaching in the classroom. To become a teacher, one must instill ethics and patriotism. Teachers must have the determination to become a teacher.

Mueen Uddin, Principal of Mymensingh Teachers Training College, said these words at a gathering organized in Mymensingh on the occasion of the IPDC-Prothom Alo Dear Teacher Award 2025. The gathering of the Mymensingh region was organized at the IPDC Finance Office in the city’s Chhota Bazar area at 5 pm today, Tuesday.
Teachers, poets and writers, cultural workers, organizers, and other people from various classes and professions participated in the event in Mymensingh. The Dear Teacher Award was given since 2019. This year, this award will be given for the fifth time in October.
At the beginning of the program, moderated by former president of Prothom Alo Mymensingh Friends Association Nahid Mondal, a minute’s silence was observed in memory of those who died in the July mass uprising and the recent Milestone tragedy. IPDC Regional Manager Parvez Kabir and Prothom Alo’s own reporter Mostafizur Rahman delivered welcome speeches at the program. IPDC Finance Office Manager Mostafizur Rahman delivered a welcome speech. He said, ‘IPDC has launched a special loan project titled “Pragga” to increase the financial capacity of the teaching community. Through this, active and retired teachers will get the opportunity to take loans on easy terms, quickly and at minimum interest. We are always committed to ensuring this facility for teachers.’
Two videos titled ‘Akhtar Sir’ and ‘Majumdar Sir’ were shown at the Sudhi rally. Everyone present became emotional after watching the video honoring teachers. At this time, the guests stood up and honored the teachers at the Sudhi rally. After the video was shown, Sadia Zaman, an assistant teacher at Afroz Khan Model School, who came to give a speech, was moved to tears. She said, “Although I started teaching a few years ago, I still remember the face of my favorite teacher. I remember the teacher’s advice. My favorite teacher is no longer alive, I became a teacher today.”
Nasima Akhter, head teacher of Mymensingh Vidyamayi Girls’ High School, who received the Favorite Teacher Award at the ceremony, and Taposh Majumder, a former teacher at Government Laboratory High School, expressed their feelings. Former Principal of Muslim Girls High School and College Lieutenant Colonel Shahab Uddin, Associate Professor of Accounting and Information Systems Department of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam University Shafiqul Islam, Principal of Mymensingh Commerce College Ekhlas Uddin, Poet and Playwright Farid Ahmed, Archaeological Researcher and Teacher Swapan Dhar, Vice President of Sujan Metropolitan Branch Touhiduzzaman Choton, Vice Principal of Mymensingh Polytechnic Institute Md. Shawkat Hossain, Head Teacher of Government Laboratory School Mohammad Shafiq Ullah, Head Teacher of Premier Ideal School Chan Mia, Principal of Mymensingh College Shafiqul Haider, Principal of Bhaluka Government College Kamruzzaman, Social Worker Ali Yusuf, Assistant Teacher of Boyra Chalakandi Government Primary School Bilkis Akhter, Cultural Worker Shamim Ashraf, among others, spoke at the event.
Poet and playwright Farid Ahmed said, ‘Although teachers are properly evaluated in developed countries, it is not done in our country. If teachers are not properly evaluated, good teachers will not be found.’ Colonel Shahab Uddin said, ‘Leave the students to develop their creative talents. Students do not have to get 100, let them develop as human beings. Currently, teachers are very afraid of mobs. Chairs are being taken away, how much more. Respect teachers, we must give it. Leave institutional education, give importance to making children human beings. So that we can form an ideal nation with students, teachers must be ideal. Otherwise, there is no need to come to this profession.’
The organizers said that the ‘IPDC-Prothom Alo Dear Teacher Award 2025’ has been started for the fifth time as a joint initiative of IPDC Finance PLC and Prothom Alo to honor teachers. Interested persons can nominate online (www. priyoshikkhok. com) through this website. This year, a total of seven teachers from two categories—primary and secondary—will be given the ‘Dear Teacher Award 2025’. To be eligible for this award, a teacher must be at least 40 years of age. Both working and retired teachers are eligible for nomination. Both the nominator and the teacher must be citizens of Bangladesh and an individual can nominate a maximum of three teachers.
