2 arrested for fraud in the name of selling Hilsa through Facebook page

Police have arrested two people on charges of fraud in the name of selling hilsa on social media Facebook. They were arrested in a raid in Narail district on Wednesday evening. The arrested people are Md. Sifat Molla (25) and Md. Masum Beg (25).

This information was given in a press release by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on Friday. It said that on July 5, around 10:30 am, a person was using Facebook on his mobile phone in front of the newspaper sales center at Gate No. 1 of New Market when he saw a tempting advertisement for hilsa fish on a page called ‘Chandpur Hilsa Ghat’.

Attracted by the advertisement, he contacted the WhatsApp number mentioned on that page. At one stage, he sent money to various numbers given by the fraudsters through the mobile banking app to buy hilsa fish. In this way, the fraudsters embezzled more than two lakh taka from the person through various methods. He filed a case with the New Market Police Station as the plaintiff in the incident.

The press release further said that with the help of intelligence information and technology obtained during the investigation of the case, the location of those involved in the incident was identified. Based on this, an operational team of New Market Police Station arrested Md. Sifat Molla from Ratanganj Bazar of Narail Sadar Police Station at around 7:30 pm on Wednesday and Md. Masum Beg from Kalia Police Station area of the same district at around 5:15 am on Thursday. At that time, four mobile phones and a SIM card used for fraud were seized from them. Legal action is under process against the arrested.
