Brazil’s Supreme Court orders former President Bolsonaro to be placed under house arrest
A judge at Brazil’s Supreme Court has ordered former President Jair Bolsonaro to be placed under house arrest. The judge made the order on Monday local time for violating a ban on using social media.
The court order further increased tensions between the former right-wing politician and the court, who is on trial for plotting a military coup.

The former army officer is an ally of US President Donald Trump. He is on trial for conspiring to retain power despite losing to President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in the 2022 election. Last month, the court ordered Bolsonaro (70) to wear an electric leg cuff to monitor his movements after he was accused of obstructing justice with inflammatory speeches. He was also banned from using social media. His sons and allies have given inflammatory speeches online. Third parties are also banned from broadcasting such speeches to the public online.
On Sunday, several cities in Brazil held rallies in solidarity with Bolsonaro. Among them, in Rio de Janeiro, Bolsonaro’s allies defied a court order by broadcasting a live phone conversation between him and his son.
Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes reacted angrily to the incident. He said on Monday that the judiciary would not allow a defendant to be fooled by his “political and economic power.”
The judge criticized Bolsonaro for repeatedly defying court orders and ordered him to be placed under house arrest at his home in the capital, Brasilia. He also banned the former president from meeting anyone other than his lawyer and from using his cell phone.
Washington is expected to react angrily to the court’s new move. President Trump has already called the trial against Bolsonaro “anti-opposition” and imposed heavy tariffs on Brazil. At the same time, he also imposed a ban on Judge Moraes.
