Political parties are feeling the urge to form an institution like the National Constitutional Council (NCC) to make appointments to various constitutional institutions, said National Consensus Commission Vice President Professor Ali Riaz.

The third meeting of the second phase of the Consensus Commission with political parties on the issue of reforms was held at the Doel Hall of the Foreign Service Academy in the capital on Wednesday. The vice president of the commission said this later.

The discussion began at 11:30 am on Wednesday. Leaders of various political parties including BNP, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP), Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), Islami Andolan Bangladesh, Amar Bangladesh (AB) Party, Biplobi Workers Party, Nagorik Oikya, Gana Sanghati Andolan, Gana Odhikar Parishad participated in it. The agenda of the day included completing the previous unfinished discussions, the National Constitutional Council (NCC), presidential elections and the District Coordination Council.

Professor Ali Riaz said, “On behalf of the Consensus Commission, we have tried to understand whether the political parties feel the need to form an institution to make appointments to various constitutional institutions. We have seen that the parties have shown urgency in this regard. They have tried to express it in different ways.” Noting that one or two political parties have expressed their opinion against the formation of the NCC, the Vice-Chairman of the Consensus Commission said, “Overall, we have seen the urge to form an institution like the NCC. Many have expressed their opinion on the structure and scope. Many have also talked about changing the name. The discussion will continue next week.”

Noting that there are differences of opinion in any discussion, Professor Ali Riaz said, “In the initial stage, we received different opinions in different discussions with the parties. Therefore, an opportunity has been created for all parties to exchange views in the second stage of the discussion. Progress has been made in the discussion.”
