It will not be possible for the next government to ignore the desire for reform so easily: Asif Nazrul
Law Advisor Professor Asif Nazrul believes that it will not be possible for the next government in Bangladesh to ignore the desire for reform so easily. Arguing in favor of his idea, he said, ‘Because, the people of Bangladesh have never made so much trouble, so much sacrifice for any reform or for repairing the state.’
It will not be possible for the next government to ignore the desire for reform so easily: Asif Nazrul
The Law Advisor said these things in his presiding speech at a program organized at the Judicial Administration Training Institute on Wednesday afternoon. The Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs organized a view-sharing meeting on the initial draft of the Assistant Attorney Service Ordinance. ‘We have received many opportunities, we have not been able to make good use of any of them,’ Asif Nazrul said, ‘This time, I think that after so much sacrifice, so much bloodshed, this time, our opportunity to repair the state has come, the opportunity to establish a little good governance, human rights, if we miss that opportunity this time… I think we will not get this opportunity in the next few decades. So, we should not miss this opportunity in any way.’
Invited guests participated in the discussion on the initial draft of the Assistant Attorney Service Ordinance at the meeting. During this time, various problems and issues to be addressed in the draft were highlighted. In response, the legal advisor said, ‘We will do more consultations. I will give more opinions. I am very happy that this law has been completely revised for us. It has been good. An incentive has been created for us. We will try to do better.’
Stating that more consultations will be taken to finalize the draft, legal advisor Asif Nazrul said, ‘A very good suggestion is coming, consultation with political parties. It is very relevant for political parties, I will definitely do it. With the cooperation of all of you, God willing, we will be able to make a good law and we hope that during this government’s tenure, if we can provide at least some appointments to the attorney service, we will try.’
The legal advisor said, ‘I always heard that there are many parties to the corruption or irregularities that occur in the lower courts or the high courts. It’s not just your support staff or judges who do it. A class of lawyers, government lawyers also have a role. I have done some research and heard that they get very little, very little money. Especially those who come to the public prosecutor’s office, but everyone is very interested in this. Because, I have heard such complaints, again I say, don’t take the complaint differently. There are some examples of government lawyers working for the opponent and taking money. Not everyone. There are many who have done or are doing very good practice.’
The meeting was also addressed by Housing and Public Works Ministry Advisor Adilur Rahman, Home Ministry Special Prosecutorial Assistant Ehsanul Haque Samaji, International Crimes Tribunal Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam, Additional Attorney General Mohammad Arshadur Rouf, Supreme Court Lawyer Ruhul Quddus Kajal, Lawyer Tanim Hossain Shaon, Lawyer Sharif Bhuiyan, BGB Public Prosecutor Md. Borhan Uddin, District and Sessions Judge Court Dhaka Public Prosecutor Md. Iqbal Hossain, Law and Justice Department Secretary Sheikh Abu Taher, among others.
