The current interim government is ignoring everything necessary for the transition to a democratic process. Through this, the country is moving towards an uncertainty. In such a situation, talk about budget and economic policy, nothing will work.

BNP Standing Committee member and former Commerce Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said these words at a dialogue organized by the Citizen Platform titled ‘Policy Reforms and the National Budget of the Future’ at a hotel in Gulshan, the capital, on Monday.

Special Assistant to the Chief Advisor Anisuzzaman Chowdhury was the chief guest at the event. Debapriya Bhattacharya, Honorary Fellow of the Center for Policy Dialogue (CPD), a private research organization, presented the keynote speech.

Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said, ‘It is the main responsibility of this government to take the necessary steps to lead Bangladesh towards democratic transformation. Where are we going at the moment, where will Bangladesh go in the future, how long will this government last, when will the elections be held, where will Bangladesh go after the elections—these issues are on everyone’s minds. We do not see any certainty here.’

Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury commented that the budget is being prepared based on a questionable GDP (gross domestic product). He said, “Through this, we are basically seeing the continuation of the budget of the previous fascist government. Nothing has been done separately from that. We need to ask ourselves how much the country’s current economic and global background has been considered in preparing the budget.”
