35 houses in Rangamati submerged in landslide
At least 35 houses in Manikchhari and Sapchhari unions of Rangamati Sadar Upazila have been submerged in the water of the mountain stream coming down from the upstream. This situation has arisen due to continuous heavy rains since Sunday night and this Monday morning. According to Sapchhari Union Parishad and local sources, the water of the Manikchhari stream has increased in Manikchhari and Sapchhari unions due to heavy rains. In addition, the mountain stream has come down from the upstream. As a result, several areas of Manikchhari, Bodhipur, Madhyampara and Khamarpara villages located on the banks of the Manikchhari stream were submerged. 30 to 35 raw and semi-finished houses in all those areas have been submerged. As the rains subsided after noon, the water of the mountain stream began to recede. By this afternoon, the water had receded from the houses. However, the residents are struggling to clean the silt and mud from the submerged houses.

Alok Chakma and Nihar Kumar Chakma of Madhyampara village said that the water has receded, but mud is still stuck in the houses. They said that they have been working to remove mud all day.
Sapchhari Union Parishad Chairman Praveen Chakma told Prothom Alo that the Manikchhari dam has been filled with silt. That is why even a little rain causes the surrounding areas to be submerged. For several years, people of the two unions have been suffering due to this. It has become necessary to dig out the Manikchhari dam. Otherwise, houses will sink like this every year.
