ACC to investigate allegations of embezzlement of Tk 7.5 crore against former CEC Nurul Huda

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has started an investigation against former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda and several members and officials of his time on charges of embezzling government funds in the name of training. ACC Director General Md. Akhter Hossain told reporters this information on Monday afternoon. He said that a decision has been taken to investigate the allegations that the Election Commission spent 74.757 crore taka by showing fake activities in the name of training and ignoring the policy.

The Director General said that the allegations against the former Chief Election Commissioner, Commissioners, Secretary and other relevant persons will be investigated. After the detailed investigation, it will be possible to say who had what role. Apart from this, if there are any other irregularities, they will also be investigated. He said that this money was spent in the name of training on the occasion of the 11th National Parliament election and the 5th Upazila Parishad election. The money was spent ignoring the approval of the Finance Ministry and the Election Commission’s own policies. Nurul Huda conducted the 11th National Parliament election held in 2018. In January 2021, 10 Supreme Court lawyers filed a complaint with the ACC against Chief Election Commissioner Nurul Huda, five commissioners and two secretaries for embezzling money through fake bills. The accused included Mahbub Talukder, Rafiqul Islam, Kabita Khanam, retired Brigadier General Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury, former secretary Helaluddin Ahmed and current secretary Alamgir Hossain.

Police arrested Nurul Huda from his residence in Uttara in the capital on June 22.
