Local residents and police said that the truck was going to Chandpur with malt from Falmondi in Chittagong. However, due to a mechanical fault, the truck was moving slowly on one side of the highway. At that time, a lorry carrying a container hit the truck from behind. As a result, the truck overturned and fell on the road divider. The lorry driver was seriously injured in the incident. Later, he was rescued and taken to the Upazila Health Complex by local residents. When asked about it, Fahim Ferdous, a doctor from the emergency department of Mirsarai Upazila Health Complex, told Prothom Alo that the driver’s right leg had a vein cut. He has been sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Zorarganj Highway Police Station Abdullah Al Mamun told Prothom Alo that they recovered the truck and lorry on the spot after receiving the news of the accident. Necessary measures will be taken in this regard.

Repeated accidents at the same place

This is not the first accident in the Sonapahar area of Mirsarai Upazila of Chittagong; at least four accidents have been reported in this area in the last five days. A truck driver was killed in this. Local residents say that these accidents are happening due to the chaotic movement of auto-rickshaws in front of the CNG filling station on the Dhaka-bound lane and the stopping of broken vehicles on the road to repair them.

Highway police and fire service sources said that four accidents have occurred in the Sonapahar area from last Wednesday to this Sunday. Three of them happened last Wednesday. That day, a truck driver named Jamal Uddin was killed when a cement truck hit the back of a freight truck. The latest accident happened today.

Local resident Md. Abdus Salam told Prothom Alo, “CNG-powered auto-rickshaws ply chaotically on this road. These increase the risk of accidents.’

Jorarganj Highway Police Station OC Abdullah Al Mamun said, ‘Accidents often occur due to drivers’ sleepiness in the early morning and slippery roads during rain. However, we are also observing why accidents are happening repeatedly in the Sonapahar area. The area has been identified as accident-prone. Necessary initiatives will be taken, including installing warning signboards.’
