Gopalganj district BNP requests not to harass innocent people

District BNP leaders have requested the law enforcement agencies and the administration not to harass innocent citizens in the case filed over the clash over the Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) rally in Gopalganj. They made this appeal at a press conference at the district BNP office in Borabazar Municipal Market in the city at 11 am today, Monday.

District BNP convener Sharif Rafiquzzaman read out a written statement at the press conference. District BNP acting member secretary Kazi Abul Khair and leaders of BNP and allied organizations were present at the time.

In the written statement, it was said that before the NCP’s pre-announced rally on July 16, leaders and activists of Awami League and its allied organizations cut down government trees on the side of the road and blocked the road to disrupt the rally. At that time, government officials and police members on duty were attacked, vehicles vandalized and set on fire, creating fear in the public. Various important government establishments were attacked and vandalized, and several pavilions of BNP leaders in Gopalganj city were vandalized. After the rally, a procession was also held to attack the NCP leaders. At one stage, the NCP leaders and activists also chased the Awami League leaders and activists, resulting in many casualties. In that incident, the law enforcement agencies have filed several cases in Gopalganj Sadar, Kotalipara, Kashiani, Tungipara and Muksudpur police stations. In the press conference, the district administration, police, army and all law enforcement agencies were requested to keep an eye on these cases so that no innocent, peace-loving citizen is harassed.

In a written statement, it was said that the district BNP is expressing its condemnation and anger for the cases filed in various police stations of the district over the NCP rally in Gopalganj Municipal Park. In the coming days, it is specially requested that all law enforcement agencies including the District Commissioner be vigilant so that no evil force can create any kind of attack or obstruction in the meetings, gatherings and processions of any registered legal political party. It was informed in the press conference that if the current environmental situation in the district calms down, the leaders and activists of the district BNP and its associate organizations will organize protests, processions and meetings against attacks and terrorism.

Among others present at the press conference were district BNP convening committee members Taufiqul Islam, KM Babar, MA Selim, Sadar Upazila BNP president Shikder Shahidul Islam (Lenin), general secretary Fazlur Kabir Dara, district Jubo Dal president Riaz Uddin (Lipton), general secretary Rasheduzzaman Palash, district Swechchhasebak Dal convener Sajjad Hossain (Hira), joint convener Mahmudul Hasan, district Chhatra Dal president Mikail Hossain, general secretary Saiful Islam, among others.
