Israel carried out airstrikes on the Syrian capital Damascus and the southern Sweida region on Wednesday. At the time, Israel demanded the withdrawal of government forces from Sweida. The country claims that it carried out the attack to protect Syria’s Druze minority community. The community is small but influential. A part of the Druze live in Israel and Lebanon.

“We call on the Druze, Bedouin and Sunnis to lay down their arms and build a new and united Syria with other minorities,” US Ambassador to Turkey Tom Barrack said in a post on social media.

Tom Barrack also said that Israel and Syria have agreed to a ceasefire supported by Turkey, Jordan and neighboring countries.

The Israeli embassy and the Syrian consulate in Washington did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The violence in the Sweida region of Syria has been going on for about a week. The violence began with clashes between Bedouin fighters and Druze groups.

The Syrian presidential office said on Friday night that special forces would be deployed to the south to stop the fighting. Political and security measures would be taken to prevent a new conflict and restore stability.

Damascus sent government troops to southern Syria earlier this week to stop the fighting. But there were allegations that the troops carried out widespread repression against local Druze. Government troops retreated after being hit by Israeli attacks on Wednesday.

Israel has repeatedly said it will not allow Syria to deploy troops in the country’s south, but on Tuesday it reversed that position, saying it would allow Syrian forces to enter the area for a short period of time to halt the fighting.
