BNP is actively working to regain the party’s lost stronghold in Bogra, the home district of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman, in the upcoming parliamentary elections. The party’s stronghold was shaken by losing two of the seven parliamentary seats in the district in the 2008 elections. It lost all five seats in the 2018 elections. The party is eager to keep all the seats in the upcoming elections.

After the meeting of the interim government’s chief advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus and BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman in London, UK, the party has entered a full-fledged election atmosphere. The party’s potential nomination candidates are now busy in the field, holding public relations, opinion-sharing meetings and exchanging greetings with voters in the area.

Jamaat-e-Islami, a former partner in the electoral alliance, is not sitting still. They are desperate to share in BNP’s stronghold. Jamaat has already announced a single candidate for seven parliamentary seats. Although the activity and loud presence of BNP and Jamaat leaders was noticeable ahead of the elections, the activity of leaders of other political parties including Jatiya Nagorik Party, Jatiya Party, Islami Andolan Bangladesh was not so noticeable. Abdul Mannan was elected as a member of parliament in the contest and in 2018, defeating BNP candidate Kazi Rafiqul Islam. After his death in 2019, his wife Sahadara Mannan became a member of parliament in the by-election and in the 2024 elections.

Currently, BNP’s nomination aspirant Kazi Rafiqul Islam is loud in the field. He spent a busy time in the constituency during the Eid holidays. He exchanged Eid greetings with voters, held public relations and opinion-exchange meetings. He said, ‘I have worked for the development of the area. I have been by the side of the voters in times of trouble.’ He is optimistic about winning if he gets the nomination.

Among the BNP nomination aspirants in this seat are Mosharraf Hossain Chowdhury, Central General Secretary of Zia Shishu Kishore Sanghatan, and Ahsanul Tayyab, President of Sonatala Upazila BNP.

Jamaat has announced former district Jamaat Ameer and member of the party’s central executive council, Principal Shahabuddin, as its candidate for this seat.
