YouTube is shutting down the trending section, why?

Google is shutting down YouTube’s ‘Trending’ section from July 21. The Google-owned video streaming platform has made this decision based on data that this section, which was launched in 2015, has gradually lost its relevance to users.

YouTube is shutting down the trending section, why?

According to YouTube, the way users view content has changed over time. Showing which videos are the most popular in a single list is no longer enough. Users are now finding their favorite videos from recommendations, search suggestions, subscriptions, community tabs or the comment section. As a result, the need for the ‘Trending’ section has decreased.

In a message, YouTube said, ‘When we launched the Trending section in 2015, viral videos meant what everyone was watching at the same time. That could be highlighted in a list. But now, various micro-trends are being created from different communities and fans. It’s impossible to represent them in a single list.’

After the trending section is removed, users will be able to find popular content in ‘YouTube Charts’. The feature, which was launched in 2018, currently shows trending music videos, weekly top podcasts and trailers for popular movies. However, YouTube has said that more new categories will be added in the future.

According to analysts, YouTube’s algorithm-based recommendations are now the main means of finding content. As a result, attempts to publish trending lists that take into account the diverse preferences and behaviors of multiple communities have become practically obsolete.
