Eastern Railway Divisional Manager ABM Kamruzzaman confirmed the matter to Prothom Alo this Monday morning. Earlier yesterday evening, after the incident, angry passengers surrounded the stationmaster’s room and protested. Later, although there was no halt at Nangalkot to handle the situation, the Subarna Express train was stopped and the passengers were sent towards their destination.

Railway sources said that the Chattala Express train (No. 802) leaving Dhaka was supposed to stop at Nangalkot station as per the rules. However, due to the wrong instructions of Assistant Station Master Rupan Chandra Shil, it left without stopping. At that time, Rupan ordered the cabin master of Laksam Railway Junction to keep the train running. The cabin master mistakenly thought that Chattala was the Subarna Express train number 702 and gave the signal. As a result, Chattala Express ignored the scheduled stoppage and passed Nangalkot.

A Comilla Railway official, on condition of anonymity, said that both trains left at close times yesterday. In addition, such a situation arose because the numbers of the two trains (802 and 702) were also close. Later, with the permission of the railway’s divisional manager, the Subarna Express train bound for Dhaka from Chittagong was stopped at Nangalkot and the situation was resolved immediately. After that, an investigation committee was formed that night and four people, including the assistant station master, were temporarily suspended.
