Two lakh people still stranded in Noakhali

Due to the lack of rain, the waterlogging situation in Maijdi, the city of Noakhali district, has improved somewhat. However, many roads and houses are still submerged in water. The district administration said that about two lakh people in Noakhali, including the district headquarters, Subarnachar, Kabirhat, Companiganj, Hatia, Senbagh, are still waterlogged.

On Saturday morning, a site visit was made to Laxminarayanpur, Collegepara, East Maijdi, the Deputy Commissioner’s Office and the Police Superintendent’s Office, District Judge’s Court Road, Central Road, Dargabari and Maijdi Municipal Bazar areas of the district city of Maijdi. It was seen on the site that water was accumulating on the roads in these areas. However, the water has receded somewhat.
Rafiqul Islam, a resident of Jamadarbari, East Maijdi, told Prothom Alo that water had also entered some of their houses. As there was no rain in the last 24 hours, the water has receded a lot. However, there is still about one foot of water in the courtyard and on the road. Rafiqul said that they are suffering even with a little rain due to the lack of drainage system.

Autorickshaw driver (mixer) Md. Rubel was taking passengers on the Maijdi Hakim Quarter road. He told Prothom Alo that the road was submerged in knee-deep water for about five days. Due to this, passengers could not be transported on the road. Today, the water level has receded and passengers have been brought. Water is still accumulating in many places on the dilapidated road. We have to travel at a risk.

District Meteorological Observatory High Observer Md. Azrul Islam told Prothom Alo that there has been no rain worth mentioning in Noakhali in the last 24 hours. There is no possibility of heavy rain for now. However, there may be drizzle.

District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Md. Masudur Rahman said that according to the latest information updated at 3 pm on Friday, 46,070 families in 6 upazilas of the district are in waterlogged condition. The number of members of these families is about 1 lakh 92 thousand. 1,850 people have taken shelter in 47 shelters in the district. 46 mud houses have been damaged due to waterlogging and flooding.
