The court has ordered the arrest of economist and former chairman of Janata Bank Professor Abul Barkat in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Abul Barkat was produced before the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court on Friday afternoon. According to court sources, a three-day remand was sought in the ACC case. On the other hand, the accused requested the rejection of the remand application. The court ordered him to be sent to jail, stating that the remand application will be heard later.
The ACC filed a case against 23 people, including Abul Barkat, on February 20, on charges of embezzling Tk 297 crore from the Enontex Group. Abul Barkat was arrested in this case on Thursday night.
Joint Commissioner of the Intelligence Department (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Md. Nasirul Islam told Prothom Alo that Abul Barkat was arrested from Dhanmondi in the capital at around 12:45 am yesterday.
The ACC says that former Bangladesh Bank governors Atiur Rahman and Abul Barkat colluded with each other to provide loans of Tk 2.97 billion to 22 companies of the Enontex Group through fraud. The case alleges that Atiur Rahman, his associates and others embezzled the money through various unethical methods.
