Desk Report,
CUET student permanently expelled for insulting Islam and the Prophet Muhammad
The university administration has permanently expelled a student of the Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) for allegedly insulting Islam and the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) on social media. On Thursday, the expulsion of the student from the Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering (ETE) department was announced in a notification signed by the director of the university’s Student Welfare Department, Md. Mahbubul Alam. The notification said that an investigation committee was formed based on written complaints from general students of the university regarding insulting Islam and the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) on social media. Based on the committee’s report, the decision to temporarily expel the student was taken in the 291st emergency meeting of the university’s disciplinary committee on June 20. It was also ordered to submit a written reply to the university’s Student Welfare Department by July 7, asking why he would not be permanently expelled. But the student did not respond within the specified time frame. Therefore, the decision to permanently expel the student from the university was taken at the 292nd meeting of the disciplinary committee last Tuesday. According to university sources, on June 19, the student was accused of making multiple posts and comments on Facebook insulting Islam and the Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH). After that, the general students held a protest march on the campus the next day demanding his permanent expulsion from the university and his arrest. When asked to know, the director of the university’s Student Welfare Department, Md. Mahbubul Alam, told Prothom Alo that the decision to temporarily expel him was taken after reviewing the report of the investigation committee formed in the wake of the general students’ complaints. After that, although he was given a deadline to defend himself, the student did not respond. Therefore, the decision to permanently expel him has been taken. However, if the student wants, he can appeal this punishment to the chairman of the academic council within the next 15 days.
