Instructions to complete election preparations by December

In a meeting with Home Affairs Advisor Lieutenant General (retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury and high-level law and order representatives at the State Guest House Jamuna on Wednesday, Principal Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus ordered to make various preparations for the elections.

At a press conference organized at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital at 8 pm, the Chief Advisor’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam and Deputy Press Secretary Mohammad Abul Kalam Azad Majumdar highlighted the discussions and instructions of the meeting. At that time, the Press Secretary said that the Principal Advisor said that the elections will be held in February or April. This means that everything that is needed to prepare the institutional structure required for the elections must start now.

Last June, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman met with Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus in London. After that meeting, a joint statement was issued announcing that if all preparations are completed, the elections could be held before the holy month of Ramadan next year, i.e. in the first half of February.

Now, the government has officially announced the process of preparing for the elections. Although the meeting in the presence of the Chief Advisor yesterday was mainly about law and order issues, various election-related preparations were discussed.

At the press conference, the Chief Advisor’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam said that the Chief Advisor has asked that all law and order preparations surrounding the elections be made by December. 17,000 new members are being recruited for the law and order forces (Police, BGB, Coast Guard). The Chief Advisor has also instructed that their recruitment and training should be completed by this time.

Shafiqul Alam said that many tricks are being used in the run-up to the elections to deteriorate the law and order situation. The chief advisor has instructed law enforcement agencies to strictly enforce the law in the coming months ahead of the elections.
