Indefinite transport strike in Sylhet suspended at noon, withdrawn in the evening
An indefinite transport strike began at 6 am on Tuesday with six demands, including the opening of a stone quarry in Sylhet that was closed on lease and the removal of the deputy commissioner. However, seven hours later, at around 1 pm, transport workers’ leaders announced the suspension of the strike after assurances from the administration and politicians. Later, at around 3 pm, administration officials, political leaders, and leaders of transport owners and workers’ organizations held a meeting at the Sylhet Divisional Commissioner’s office. There, the administration assured that the transport strike would be withdrawn at around 7 pm.

The indefinite transport strike began at 6 am on Tuesday with six-point demands, including the opening of the stone quarry that was closed on lease and the removal of the deputy commissioner. However, seven hours later, at around 1 pm, transport workers’ leaders announced the suspension of the strike on the assurance of the administration and politicians. Later, at around 3 pm, administration officials, political leaders, and leaders of transport owners and workers’ organizations held a meeting at the Sylhet Divisional Commissioner’s office. There, it was announced that the transport strike would be withdrawn at around 7 pm on the assurance of the administration.
Earlier, during the seven-hour strike from 6 am to 1 pm, people leaving Sylhet for various destinations suffered. Many people got into trouble after leaving their homes in the morning. Most of the passengers passed the time sitting at the Kadamtali Central Bus Terminal in Sylhet. Again, some passengers returned home without being able to reach their destinations. Traffic movement returned to normal after the strike was announced to be suspended at around 1 pm. Despite this, traffic was slightly less throughout the day on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, a meeting was held with transport workers’ leaders in the conference room of the Divisional Commissioner’s office in the afternoon under the chairmanship of Sylhet Divisional Commissioner Khan Md. Reza-un-Nabi. Former mayor of Sylhet City Corporation and advisor to the BNP chairperson Ariful Haque Chowdhury, District Jamaat Secretary Joynal Abedin, Metropolitan BNP acting president Rezaul Hasan Kayes Lodi, General Secretary Imdad Hossain Chowdhury, Metropolitan Jamaat Amir Md. Fakhrul Islam were present. Among the administration officials, Sylhet Additional DIG Md. Azizul Islam, Sylhet Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md. Rezaul Karim, Sylhet Additional Divisional Commissioner Debjit Singh, Sylhet Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Sher Mahbub Murad, Sylhet Police Superintendent and Metropolitan Police officials were present.
