BNP has changed its position from 35 years ago in the interest of the people: Salahuddin Ahmed

Salahuddin Ahmed said, “No objection was raised nationally to that decision 35 years ago. The 67 courts that currently exist, including various checkpoint courts and islands, were also decided at that time. But times have changed. We are going through a reform. New demands have been created by the nation. Considering that, BNP has agreed to this proposal anew.”

Salahuddin Ahmed said this in a question-and-answer session with journalists after a discussion with the National Consensus Commission at the Doel Hall of the Foreign Service Academy in the capital on Monday.

The agenda of the Consensus Commission’s meeting on Monday included the expansion of subordinate courts at the upazila level, declaration of a state of emergency, and women’s representation. Although the first two issues were discussed, women’s representation was not discussed due to lack of time.

BNP has agreed in principle to the consensus commission’s proposal on declaring a state of emergency. However, proposals were raised by political parties to protect human rights during the state of emergency.

Salahuddin Ahmed said that the issue of protecting human rights during the state of emergency is vast. BNP believes that this detailed discussion should take place in the next elected parliament.

Overall, BNP has agreed in principle with two proposals in the consensus commission’s discussion, said Salahuddin Ahmed. He said, “The political parties have proposed to keep several attachments in the court expansion proposal. We have also requested for discussions with the High Court.”
