Earlier, Supreme Court lawyer Md. Jasim Uddin sent a notice to Sarjis Alam on May 24, calling the status posted on Facebook about the High Court ‘derogatory’ and ‘insulting’. After receiving the reply to the notice, the lawyer filed a contempt of court petition against Sarjis Alam on May 28.

Lawyer Md. Jasim Uddin himself conducted the hearing on behalf of the petition in the court. Later, he told Prothom Alo that the court has fixed July 20 for the order after hearing the contempt of court petition.

In the notice sent by the lawyer on May 24, the Registrar General of the Supreme Court requested Sarjis Alam to give a written explanation regarding the status and apologize unconditionally to the Chief Justice.

According to the information mentioned in the notice, lawyer Mamunur Rashid filed a writ in the High Court challenging the verdict-decree of the Election Tribunal and the Election Commission’s gazette declaring Ishraq Hossain as the mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation. After the hearing, the High Court dismissed the writ outright at around 11:30 am on May 22 as inadmissible. The notice reads, ‘After the verdict was announced on May 22, you (Sarjis Alam) gave a reaction to the verdict on your verified Facebook ID at around 11:49 am. This status was published in the media. Through the comments mentioned in that status, you have shown disrespect to the judiciary, one of the pillars of the state, which is disrespectful to the country’s highest court, namely the Supreme Court, and is contemptuous of the court.’
