Jamaat agrees with proposal to expand courts at upazila level: Hamidur Rahman

Hamidur Rahman Azad said this during a break in discussions with the consensus commission at the Doel Hall of the Foreign Service Academy in the capital on Monday.

The other two agenda items of today’s meeting include the declaration of a state of emergency and women’s representation. Discussions on the remaining two issues will resume after the lunch break.

Hamidur Rahman Azad said that his party Jamaat-e-Islami believes that the current consensus commission or the creation of the interim government is in the interest of the people. Therefore, they want to take the courts to the doorsteps of the people in the interest of the people. He said that many people at the marginal level are financially insolvent. It is difficult for them to go to the district town and get justice by hiring a lawyer. Along with this, there is the cost of accommodation and food. Therefore, Jamaat-e-Islami is in favor of expanding the courts to reduce the suffering of the people.

There are currently 40 chowki courts in 23 districts of the country. Jamaat-e-Islami has proposed to transform these chowkis into permanent courts. Hamidur Rahman Azad said that the infrastructure and necessary equipment for these chowkis must be provided.

In response to a question from journalists whether corruption will increase if the courts are expanded at the upazila level, Hamidur Rahman Azad said that corruption occurs in many places. Jamaat-e-Islami believes that this problem can be solved by increasing public awareness and values. To provide good governance and justice to the people, the judiciary must be taken to the doorsteps of the people.
