Desk Report,
At least 24 people have died in flash floods in the US state of Texas. At least 20 girls are missing. The incident took place in the city of San Antonio in the state on Friday local time. Local officials said that efforts are underway to rescue the children who were participating in summer camp.
Texas Kerr County Police Officer Larry Leitha said at a press conference on Friday evening that 24 people have been reported dead so far. The children have not yet been found. A total of 23 to 25 people are missing. The Guadalupe River flooded due to seasonal rains. Local authorities say the summer camp was located along the river.
Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick had earlier said that some of the dead were children. He said that the Guadalupe River rose to a height of 26 feet due to heavy rains for 45 minutes on Thursday night. About 750 children were participating in summer camp on the banks of the river. The missing children are members of that group. Videos posted on social media showed homes and trees being uprooted by floodwaters. According to the local weather office, 12 inches of rain fell in the Kerr area on Thursday night. This is one-third of the total rainfall in the area for the year. After the deaths in the floods, the governor of Texas said that he had signed a “disaster declaration” to quickly provide emergency assistance to various areas in the affected area. And on Friday night, US President Donald Trump told reporters, “This flood is terrible, it’s shocking.”
