Controversy over Jaiswal’s dismissal again, England captain unhappy with Sharfuddaula’s decision
No, the two did not come face to face. Rather, England captain Ben Stokes got into a controversy over Sharfuddaula’s decision regarding Jaiswal. However, what happened at the end of the day proved that Sharfuddaula’s decision was correct.
The incident occurred in the late afternoon of the third day of the England-India second Test. In the eighth over of India’s second innings, English pacer Josh Tang appealed for LBW against Jaiswal. Sharfuddaula, who was on duty, raised his finger and declared Jaiswal out.
Although the decision pleased England, Jaiswal was hesitant. His partner Lokesh Rahul spoke about whether to challenge the umpire’s decision or not. Jaiswal said that he would take a review after a long time, and Sharfuddaula sent it to the third umpire as per the rules.
At this stage of the incident, Stokes rushed towards Sharfuddaula. He claimed that the 15-second time limit for the review had passed. There was no more opportunity for a review. At this time, Sharfuddaula told him that Jaiswal had taken the review within the time limit. However, Stokes was not willing to accept it even though he said that the review was within the rules. Stokes continued to argue with the umpire for quite some time. In the meantime, the other umpire of the match, Chris Gaffani, also joined in. Stokes was seen to be quite unhappy with the whole scene.
Meanwhile, TV umpire Paul Rifle reviewed and found that Jaiswal was out. Jaiswal left the field after knowing the final decision, and India lost a review. In other words, the decision to get Sharfuddaula out was correct – in the middle, Jaiswal felt that the umpire did not give the correct decision, while Stokes felt that the umpire gave him the opportunity to take a review after the stipulated time.
