Pakistan-India ceasefire: So was Trump telling the truth or was Jaishankar?

Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar has denied US President Donald Trump’s repeated claim that he persuaded India and Pakistan to sign a ceasefire by talking about trade. In an interview with Newsweek in New York on Monday, Jaishankar said about Trump’s claim, “I was present in the room when Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Vice President JD Vance on the phone. Trade did not come up once during the conversation.”

Jaishankar also said, “Pakistan wanted to start an economic war. They wanted to endanger the economy of Jammu and Kashmir by attacking Pahalgam. The economy of Kashmir is mainly tourism-based. They wanted to destroy that.”

The Indian Foreign Minister said, “Apart from that, their (Pakistan) goal was to create communal unrest. So, they wanted to know what religion they killed.’

After India launched an attack on Pakistan in retaliation for the Pahelgam incident, the two countries fought for four days under the name of Operation Sindoor. After that, India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire. The ceasefire is still being debated today. President Trump has repeatedly (16 times so far) claimed that he stopped the fighting between the two countries by telling them about the trade agreement. He convinced them to agree to a ceasefire.

India continues to deny Donald Trump’s claim. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in his address to the nation that Pakistan, disoriented by India’s attack, proposed a ceasefire. Jaishankar had also said earlier that India did not agree to a ceasefire under pressure or mediation from anyone. He explained that in more detail on Monday.

Jaishankar claimed, ‘When Vice President Vance called Narendra Modi on the night of May 9, I was present in that room. Vance had said that day that Pakistan would strike hard. In response, the Prime Minister had said that in that case they would have to bear the brunt. He did not cower in fear of Pakistan.
