Shipping Advisor Brigadier General (Retd.) M Sakhawat Hossain also spoke to reporters after the meeting. He said that Chittagong Port will decide who will operate it. However, tenders will not be called. It will be through direct procurement and for six months. A decision will be made on this tomorrow, Wednesday.

The terminal has been operated by a domestic private company for 17 years. The contract of Saif Powertech Limited, which currently operates NCT, expires on July 6.

According to sources in the Ministry of Shipping, the Navy may be given the responsibility of operating this terminal from July 7. The Navy will operate the terminal with the help of the port for the next six months.

This terminal has five jetties. These five jetties can accommodate four ocean-going ships and one ship operating on inland waterways. This is the largest terminal in Bangladesh. Various tasks including loading and unloading containers from ships and transferring them are carried out at this terminal.

Before handing over the management to the Navy, a decision was made at a meeting of the Shipping Ministry on June 18 to operate the terminal under the port’s own management. For this, the port had also written to the Shipping Ministry for government approval to spend 420 million taka for 6 months at a rate of 70 million taka per month. However, the port backed out of this decision.
