Reiterating demands for justice, reform and a new constitution: Nahid Islam
On the occasion of the anniversary of the July Uprising, the ‘July March for Building the Nation’ program organized by the NCP has started from Tuesday. The program began at around 10:30 am with a visit to the grave of martyr Abu Sayeed in Babanpur Jafarpara village of Pirganj, Rangpur. Later, NCP convener Nahid Islam and member secretary Akhtar Hossain spoke to reporters.
Commenting on the ongoing tussle over the July Declaration and July Charter, Nahid Islam said, ‘We want to warn you clearly that if the government or anyone else thinks that thousands, millions of people who took to the streets have returned home, then you are thinking wrongly. We are declaring from Abu Sayeed’s grave that we will go to every nook and corner of Bengal. We will call on the students, the people, and the youth of Bengal to take to the streets again.’
Nahid Islam expressed disappointment that the trial of the July mass uprising has not yet been completed. He said, ‘There is disappointment among us. We have not yet seen the trial completed. We have not yet seen the discrimination-free Bangladesh, the reforms we have, in full.’ He said, ‘Many think that this was only a movement to overthrow the government. We think that this was not only a movement to overthrow the government. This was a movement to establish a new settlement. The mass uprising did not happen for a change of party or transfer of power. The mass uprising happened to establish a democratic settlement.’
