Iran: US must first withdraw from threat of attack before new talks can begin

After the attack, US President Donald Trump claimed that Iran’s nuclear facilities had been “completely destroyed”. But Rafael Grossi, the head of the UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said that while the damage was “serious”, it was “not complete”.

Takht-Ravanchi said, “We can enrich uranium for peaceful purposes. It is not right to call it trying to make a bomb.”

Iran’s deputy foreign minister added, “We are not getting the necessary materials for nuclear research. So we have to proceed in our own way.”

He said that the level of uranium enrichment could be a matter of discussion, “But if someone says, we have to stop it completely, otherwise there will be an attack – then that is not law, it is a rule of barbarity.”

In 2015, Iran signed a nuclear deal with six world powers and the European Union. The official name of the deal is the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which is known as the Iran nuclear deal for short. The deal was signed to monitor Iran’s nuclear activities, so that the country could not develop nuclear weapons.
Iran will not start any talks unless the US completely cancels its new attack plans, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi told the BBC.

Majid Takht-Ravanchi said the US had told Iran through several mediators in the Middle East that it wanted to return to talks. But Washington had not yet given a clear message on the “very important question” of whether there would be another attack while the talks were ongoing.

When Israel launched attacks on Iran’s nuclear and military facilities on June 13, Iran launched missile strikes. The US joined the conflict directly on Israel’s side on June 21. The country bombed three Iranian nuclear facilities.
