Awami League leader taken out of hotel in Rajshahi and handed over to police
A group of people surrounded a hotel in Rajshahi city and took out an Awami League leader and handed him over to the police. The leader is Tanor Upazila Awami League President Mainul Islam (Swapon). The incident took place at a hotel in the city’s Sahebbazar Zero Point area around 11:30 pm on Friday.

According to local sources, a group of people posing as BNP leaders and activists took up positions in front of the hotel next to the Sahebbazar Big Mosque around 10 pm yesterday. They claimed that Mainul Islam was staying inside the hotel. The hotel authorities denied it, but later the crowd started growing there. After receiving the news, Mainul’s daughter went to the spot. At around 11:30 pm, BNP leaders and activists took him out of the hotel and the police took him away.
Rajshahi Metropolitan BNP convener Bir Muktijoddha Ershad Ali said, “I heard that Awami League people were holding a secret meeting in a hotel at night. Later, the crowd surrounded them. BNP leaders and activists may have been there. However, there was no mob there. The police have detained him. Leaders and activists have been instructed not to create any kind of mob. And there was no mob in Rajshahi.’ Mostaq Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Boalia Model Police Station, told Prothom Alo that the police were sent after receiving information about people gathering in front of the hotel. Later, he was arrested and brought to the police station. No one beat him up. Today, Saturday, he was handed over to the court in a case filed in connection with the attack on the anti-discrimination student movement.
